Are Your Students Web Surfing or Working?

So, are your students really doing research for that essay or just checking out the latest Britney Spears video? Here are some of the ways that Vision can help teachers can keep track of what applications students are using in the classroom and keep them surfing appropriately:

Viewing Current Student Applications

If you just want a simple overview of what applications students have open on their PCs, open the Vision console on the desktop by double-clicking the ‘Eye’ icon. Choose ‘View’ and choose ‘Details’. Now every PC in the classroom will show the active application that is running on the student computers so you can see if they are using the application they should be working in, using the browser or playing a game.

Using Scrolling Supervision

Of course, if you want to see specifically what the students are doing on their computers, use the ‘Supervision’ button Vision’s floating toolbar. But did you know that you can set up Vision to scroll through all of the computers in the classroom? After choosing the ‘Supervision’ mode, click on the circular arrow in the Supervision window. Vision will scroll through your entire classroom, hands free, while you grade papers or accomplish other tasks.

Locking the Web with Surf-Lock

Student's Blocked Browser Window

Sometimes you just need to keep the students off the web so that you have their full attention. If you are using Vision5, you can add the Surf-Lock plug-in for Vision that lets teachers prevent surfing for one student or the entire class with the click of a mouse. You can also unlock web access as a reward for completed assignments, student research or ‘Free Surf’ time.
