Managing Student Web Surfing
These tips will show you how to manage student web activity with Vision, Surf-Lock and App-Control so you can get the best out of using web resources without distractions during important learning time in your classroom.
- How to prevent web surfing
- Directing students to teacher-chosen sites
- Managing sites for your classroom
- Sending websites to student computers
How to prevent web surfing
If you are trying to focus student attention during class and would like to temporarily prevent web surfing, you can use the Surf-Lock button on your Vision toolbar. If you only want to lock the internet for selected students, choose only the student computers in your Vision dashboard that you would like to lock.

Directing students to teacher-chosen sites
You can also use Surf-Lock2 to restrict students to only the websites that you choose for your class. In the menu example shown, every name in the menu list represents either a collection of sites that you have gathered for your students or a single site of your choice. When you choose from that list, the students in your class will be restricted to surfing the sites on that list. If you want students to be able to visit all of the sites in your list, choose “Apply All Site Lists”. To end restricted surfing in the classroom just click “Release All Site Lists”.
(Hint: Surf-Lock prevents web surfing but to choose sites for your classroom, you’ll need Surf-Lock2)

Managing sites for your classroom
To create site lists for your students, choose ‘Site List Manager’ in Surf-Lock2.

That will take to you a window where you can manage all of the websites that you would like your class to be able to visit during your lessons. The simple tree view lets you add and delete websites and save them to your selected site list.

The yellow badge (at lower left of below graphic) indicates that students can surf teacher-selected sites only:

The red badge (at lower left of below graphic) indicates that no web surfing allowed:

Sending websites to student computers
App-Control will help you send the same website to every student computer in the classroom so you don’t have to waste time writing long URLS on the whiteboard and waste class time getting everyone on the same web page. In the App-Control menu, choose ‘Run’.

Then paste your URL into the dialog box and press ‘OK’. That selected website will open on every student computer in the classroom at once.
