Distributing and Collecting Assignments Electronically Using Vision6

Distributing assignments or exams

When you create a document to share with your class, Vision allows you to open the assignment on each student computer. You can open any application that is installed on all student machines. App-Control, a Vision plug-in, allows you to keep your students working in the application you have opened on their screens. For example, if you send out an exam in Microsoft Word format, App-Control can lock your students out of everything but Word, to ensure they stay on-task.

Preparation

Start all student computers and connect to the classroom
1) Double-click the classroom short-cut on your desktop to open the classroom.
2) On the classroom toolbar, click the Connect Classroom button.

The student computer thumbnails change as the classroom connects to your computer.

Open the Chat Session to Distribute the Assignment:

Open Vision Chat by selecting Chat from the Tools menu

Once in Chat, click on the View menu and choose Options... from the drop-down menu.

Click on the Work files folder definition tab

Open the individual work files folder list by clicking on the Users button.

Right-click on the student computer and choose Set work files path.
Enter the following work file path for each student computer:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\GenevaLogic\App-Control\File Transfer

(This folder may change, if you have changed the standard Windows system variables.)

Click Set and close the window. Click Apply and then Okay and close the larger chat window.

Share the Assignment with Your Students

On the Vision toolbar, click the App-Control button and then click Share Document.

Select the document you want to share and then select either Standard or Kiosk from the Launch Mode drop-down menu, then click Open and a copy of the assignment opens on all student computers.

Note: Standard Mode will allow your students to access other applications and close the application you open on their computers, whereas Kiosk Mode will lock them into the application you open and they will not be able to close the window or access any other applications.

Collect Assignments

When your students are finished working, you can either ask them to save and close their documents, if you’ve chosen Standard Mode, or close the application yourself using App-Control.

To close the assignments yourself, click the App-Control button and then click Close All Applications. If your students have any work in progress, the computer will prompt them to save it before the application closes.

Next, open Chat from the Tools drop-down menu. Click the Collect button. The computer will ask if you want the files deleted from the student computers when they are transferred to the teacher computer. It is fine to delete the assignment from the student computers because the files will be transferred and saved to the teacher computer.

Close Chat. The collected assignments are in you My Documents folder in the Chat folder in a folder with the name of the assignment.
